Frequently Asked Questions

What is a foster/proctor parent?

Foster Parents or Proctor Parents (also known as Professional Parents) are individuals or couples who open their homes to care for children in need. They create a supportive family environment by providing nutritious meals, companionship, structure, and physical, social, and emotional care. The length of placement can vary—some children stay for a short period, while others may remain for several years, depending on their needs and family situation.

Foster Parents come from all backgrounds—single or married, retired or active duty military, LGBTQ+, and more.

How long does it take to become a foster parent?

Due to the licensing process requiring training, background checks and a home visit, this process can take anywhere between 4-8 weeks. This can vary due to the time it takes you to complete required training and how quickly your background check is processed.

Do I have to own a home to become a foster parent?

No, you do not have to own a home to become a foster parent. You can live in apartments, townhomes, manufactured homes, etc. As long as your home meets the agency's requirements and has adequate space for the youth, it will qualify.
